OTTAWA, ON, June 29, 2022 — The Canadian Anti-Hate Network is launching an education and workshop programme to give parents, educators, and community members tools to identify and intervene when a white supremacist movement is grooming and recruiting children.

The program is based on CAHN’s newly released Confronting and Preventing Hate in Canadian Schools toolkit, which specifically focuses on countering hate propaganda aimed at youth. The toolkit is available for free online at www.antihate.school.

You can join us on June 29th for the official launch at a virtual event with The Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Housing and Diversity and Inclusion. The event will be followed by a brief Q&A. Please email us for details.

Youth are reporting being targeted by white supremacist propaganda online, and CAHN has documented Canadian white supremacist groups discussing how they target children. The toolkit, and CAHN’s workshops, include real-world case studies and strategies for community support and intervention.

These anti-hate resources will empower communities to build a fence of protection against racist, gendered, and anti-2SLGBTQ+ harassment and violence.

CAHN would like to thank all its supporters for making this education programme possible, with extra special thanks to Unifor, Franklin, Brian, and Leigh for their generous gifts. The development of the toolkit was made possible thanks in part to a grant from the government’s Anti-Racism Action Program.

This education program was developed in partnership with the Western States Center, one of the United States' leading organizations working to combat white nationalism. Canadian educators and school community members provided feedback and helped refine the toolkit.

Quotes

“The Canadian Anti-Hate Network workshop on Recognizing and Preventing Hate in Canadian Schools was a crucial learning session, particularly in light of the increase in hate events over the last few years.  The workshop was informative and eye-opening - we were surprised at how many hate groups operated in Canada, and how many methods these groups use to engage and recruit youth.  This workshop was presented to guidance counsellors, but it would be an important workshop for all educational staff so they can recognize the signs of a student moving into extremist thinking.  We were so impressed with the information and support provided by CAHN, we booked them to do the workshop again in November in order to reach more participants with this critical information.”

—Katrina Cove-Shannon, VP of Professional Development, Ontario School Counselors Association

Thanks to the Anti-Racism Action Program, the Confronting and Preventing Hate in Canadian Schools toolkit will help educators and parents protect kids from racist, gendered, and anti-2SLGBTQ+ bullying. The toolkit will prevent children from being groomed and recruited by white supremacists.

—Bernie Farber, Chair, Canadian Anti-Hate Network
